Hack Attack Strikes New Jersey!

Hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents – and 80 million Americans overall – may be in danger after a historic data breach. How? The background: it has been alleged that Anthem, Inc., America’s second largest health insurance provider, failed to properly safeguard its customers’ personal information including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, income details and other intensely personal data. A resulting attack by hackers in December 2014 may have given thieves access to hundreds of thousands of current and former Anthem customers’ data. Experts are already calling this breach the largest in the history of the healthcare industry.  You can Read the USA Today article, Health data breaches sow confusion, frustration to learn more about the scope of the problem and its impact on the public at large.  In New Jersey alone, a subsidiary of Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield – Amerigroup – boasts approximately 209,000 policy-holders.

New Jersey’s Anthem Customers Are At Risk

hackerThe danger is real, alarming and ongoing. The invaluable personal data of Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield customers is now floating around the Internet – and other shadowy places – completely unprotected. Your personal date may have been stolen. Moreover, unlike when a hacker steals a credit card number, a consumer victim can’t simply change his or her birth date or Social Security number! Hackers with access to this data have a digital skeleton key to every aspect of your life. As a result, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield’s current and former customers will need to be vigilant for many months or even years to come. The Anthem data breach was nearly unprecedented in size, and was the largest to ever impact the health care industry. This means any legal action will ultimately involve plaintiffs from across the nation. You can read more about the scope of the problem in the Los Angeles Times article, Anthem is warning consumers about its huge data breach. Here’s a translation.
