Game of Thrones Star Reportedly Faces Divorce-Related Financial Turmoil

Cersei LannisterMany of our clients (and at least this DeMichele & DeMichele attorney) are fans of HBO’s popular Game of Thrones epic television series. One of the show’s primary antagonists is Queen Cersei Lannister (portrayed by actress Lena Headey) who is reportedly going through a real life divorce that’s as difficult as any fictional “game of thrones.” Leading entertainment website TMZ recently reported that Headey and her husband are presently litigating the issue of their $46,000 joint 2012 tax refund. Our firm doesn’t practice family law in California or the fantasy realm of Westeros where Headey’s character is a power broker, nor do we handle cases in the area of tax law. We do, however, spend plenty of time dealing with the divorce implications of our client’s tax problems. The tax filing deadline (April 15th) just passed, but many of our clients file extensions as they grapple with a number of murky issues. Our clients often ask whether they should file a joint return, or whether they qualify for an “innocent spouse” exemption if their spouse’s tax filings are fishy? And critically who gets the tax refund, an issue which Lena Headey’s lawyers are currently tackling. Questions concerning credits, exemptions, and the “head of household” declaration also frequently plague our clients. At DeMichele & DeMichele, our attorneys know the applicable legal standards, stay on top of developments in the law and have many years of combined experience litigating exactly this kind of case. While we are not tax attorneys, we will walk you through the steps, answer your questions, initiate the proper discovery and help you construct the best possible argument for the outcome given how your tax situation affects your divorce position. In some instances, we may refer you to tax attorney or recommend the retention of a forensic accountant to ensure that no stone is left unturned in your divorce. Don’t play the tricky “game of divorces” without the experienced help that you deserve at this difficult time. If you or a loved one has questions regarding how your tax situation affects your divorce or the divorce process generally, contact the family law lawyers at DeMichele & DeMichele. A confidential consultation is only a quick email or phone call away: (856) 546-1350.
