Your Child has been Arrested for Drug Possession … Now What?
Parents should strongly consider retaining the services of an attorney if their child is charged with a violation of the law. Even though the child will be charged as a juvenile, the consequences can be serious. Typically, these matters will not be resolved in a Municipal Court or the Criminal Division of the Superior Court. Rather, they will be disposed of in the Chancery Division-Family Part of the Superior Court. Recently, our office successfully represented a 15 year old juvenile charged with possession of marijuana in school in Burlington County. The consequences of being found guilty of drug possession can be very serious and have a lasting negative impact on a child’s future. In this case, the matter was heard by a Juvenile Conference Committee (JCC), instead of a Superior Court Judge. We were able to get the charges dismissed on the condition that his client attend a four (4) hour class at the Youth Violence Awareness Center at Cooper Hospital. We successfully argued that this resolution would be best for the juvenile’s rehabilitation. Needless to say the client and his parents were very happy with this result.
