New Jersey Moves to Expand Aid to Domestic Violence Victims in Wake of Superstorm Sandy
We routinely handle domestic violence matters at DeMichele & DeMichele. Unfortunately, victims often feel as if there aren’t sufficient resources to help them through one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
For many Garden State residents, the trials and tribulations induced by last October’s historic storm led to severe problems on the domestic front or the exacerbation of preexisting problems. New Jersey is trying to help.
Earlier this month, the governor’s office announced plans to expand domestic violence services to victims of Superstorm Sandy by disbursing $4.8 million in federal funds which will be utilizing to supplement state funding for a variety of domestic violence prevention and treatment programs. The bulk of the funds are derived from a Social Service Block Grant (SSBG) and the rest come from the Family Violence Prevention Service Act (FVPSA).
The covered services including everything from counseling and alternative housings to transportation and daycare expenses.
“Superstorm Sandy has affected so many people in so many ways,” said Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini of Monmouth County. “Its psychological effects will linger for years, especially for individuals and families who lost their homes, businesses and personal possessions. Coping with such tremendous loss is extremely stressful. Studies have shown incidences of domestic violence increases following such catastrophic events.”
“The expansion of domestic violence prevention and treatment services to those left vulnerable by the storm’s aftermath shows the administration’s commitment to leaving no stone unturned when it comes to helping all victims of the storm,” she continued. “Recovery doesn’t only involve rebuilding structures, but lives as well. I appreciate the governor for recognizing and addressing this very important issue.”
