Dangerous Trek Bicycles Recalled

Trek Bicycles Equipped with Front Disc Brakes Recalled Due to Crash Hazard

Serious injuries result from poor bicycle design.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2015 the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for Trek bicycles equipped with front disc brakes.  These bicycles that have an open quick release lever on the front wheel hub can be extremely dangerous.  The front wheel hub can come into contact with the front disc brake assembly, causing the front wheel to come to a sudden stop or separate from the bicycle. You can read the entire CPSC Trek Bicycle recall by clicking here.

Serious Injuries

There have been several severe injuries as a result of this dangerous bicycle. The CPSC is reported three injuries that are directly related to the defect in the bicycle. One rider became a quadriplegic, one rider suffered facial injuries, and the third rider suffered a broken wrist. It is likely that more injuries due to this defect will become known over time. The CPSC has urged consumers to stop using the bicycles immediately and obtain a replacement for the quick release on the front wheel. Parents should check to see if there children’s bikes are part of the recall.

CPSC Recall

The recall involves all models of Trek bicycles from model years 2000 through 2015 equipped with front disc brakes and a black or silver quick release lever on the front wheel hub that opens far enough to contact the disc brake.  See the diagrams below.                                 Bicycles with front quick release levers that do not open a full 180 degrees from the closed position, are not included in the recall. The CPSC has announced that Trek Bicycle Corporation, the bicycle’s importer, will issue a $20 coupon for the replacement of the quick release on the front wheel.  Owners of the bike can reach Trek at (800) 373-4594 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or online at www.trekbikes.com and click on Safety & Recalls at the bottom of the page for more information.

Involved Bicycles

The Trek bicycles in question were sold in the United States and Canada from September 1999 through April 2015.  The bicycles retailed between $480 and $1650. It is estimated that nearly 1 million Trek bicycles are involved in this recall.
